Q. What are the Feng Shui basics?

A. There are about 7 basic steps to feng shui that are fairly easy to do and are a good starting point for those who are interested in this ancient practice.

First of all you want to get rid of all your junk. By this I mean unimportant material possessions that you do not love that are simply cluttering your life.

Second you want to have excellent lighting and quality of air in your living quarters. Allow as much natural light into your home as possible and open the windows or use an air-purifier to help keep the air clean and fresh.

Third, you will need to learn the feng shui ba gua and define your house space using this powerfool tool. The fourth step involves learning the five elements, earth, wood, fire, water, and gold. Study these elements and introduce them into your live as needed.

Fifth, you need to determine what your feng shui birth element is and introduce it to your daily life.

Sixth you must find your Kua number and position your bed, dining tables, home office, etc according to this number and direction.

Last but not least, be mindful of the energy state in your living quarters. Pay close attention to the 'triangle' that connects to your health (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen.) The influences in your home effect the energies that influence your well-being so make an effort to keep a happy home.

Q. What is the Feng Shui Ba Gua?

A. The ba gua is like an outline to feng shui. It divides your household into 9 sections, referred to in feng shui as 'guas.' These guas represent the 9 main areas of your life: Health, Career / Life Path, Helpful People / Travel, Creativity / Children, Relationships / Love Marriage, Fame / Reputation, Prosperity / Wealth, Family / Foundation, and your Skills / Wisdom / Knowledge. Using the ba gua, you can determine which parts of your house correspond to each of the 9 areas of your life. The ba gua is also color coordinated with different colors corresponding to each section. The colors in the ba gua are black, silver, white, pink, red, purple, green and blue.

Q. How do you read a Feng Shui compass?

A. The feng shui compass is read from the inside of your house facing outside through your main door. This is done inorder to determine which direction your house is facing. Be aware that metal, gold and other sorts of hardware or even jewelry may disturb the reading of the feng shui compass. Once the reading is taken from the inside, then you must take another reading from the outside looking in. This means that you now have your back towards the door and you are looking inside the house. Again there are many electromagnetic fields that may disturb the reading of the feng shui compass, hence why you are required to take multiple readings.

Next you will need your home's blue prints so that you can pin point the exact center of your space, also known as the heart or yin-yang point. From this point, you can now determine the feng shui ba gua and begin mapping out the spaces of your life.

Q. What is a Feng Shui Red Envelope ?

A. In China, the color red is believed to have a strong force against bad qi from happening. There is a tradition called the 'Red Envelope Policy' and it serves to protect ancient knowledge and wisdom from falling into the wrong hands. Usually, a red envelope contains money or gifts which is why most feng shui consultants require that you provide their fees inside a red envelope. This shows, respect for the person who shared their knowledge with you.

Q. Are mirrors bad for Feng Shui?

A. Mirrors are not neccessarily bad feng shui. As a matter of fact, mirrors have boundless abilities to help bring about good feng shui into your home. One of the positive things of a mirror is the ability to eliminate a wall if it so happens to be too close to en entry. Becareful not to put a mirror directly infront of the main door or entry because it can and will reflect any positive qi entering your home. It is believed that a stove burner can bring money to the household but when reflected by a mirror, the wealth factor gets doubled. The same goes with any aesthetically beautiful scene that is reflected on a mirror- the good energy from this beautiful scene will get filtered into your home.

Mirrors are mysterious and creepy at times. They sometimes feel like there is another world on the other side of them. However, when used creatively, mirrors can indeed bring about some really good feng shui into your home.

Q. What is good Bedroom Feng Shui?

A. Believe it or not, there are many factors that can disrupt the energy of a bedroom. The feng shui bedroom promotes a flow of sensual and nourishing energy and should be protected against anything that can disrupt this harmony. Keep the television, computer or aerobics machines away from the bedroom as these things destroy the feng shui bedroom. Maintain a flow of clean fresh air by using an air purifier or opening windows. Lighting is very important to the feng shui bedroom. Try using a dimmer to adjust the levels of lighting in the room. The colors and images in a feng shui bedroom are very important and should reflect positivty at all times. The bed should be easily accessible from both sides, with a night table on each side, and should never face the main door in a direct line. Last but not least, make sure to keep all bedroom doors closed, including closet doors, to maintain and strengthen the flow of energy which will enhance the health of your relationship.
